I had the honor and the privilege to accompany Millville, NJ’s Team MPD on their journey to the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund’s Police Week in Washington, D.C this past weekend. Nearly two thousand riders participated in the Police Unity Tour to kick off a week-long of memorial and celebration to honor all of the lives lost in the line of duty.
Team MPD rode this year for one of their own fallen brothers, 40-year-old Officer Christopher Wayne Reeves, as well as the 319 other officers names being added to the wall from around the country.
Filled with emotion, no words could justly describe the reverence felt during the candle light vigil. Each person in attendance mourned side by side each and every name read aloud.
So, I have the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C this May and document a monumentous event! The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund each year hosts numerous celebrations during Police Week, to honor Officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the previous year. They have a week of celebration and reflection, kicked off by the arrival of the Police Unity Tour riders.
The Police Unity Tour is a collection of active and reitred Law Enforcement Officers and Officer’s survivors, who ride their bicycles over a period of 3-4 days from various regional locations and ending in Washington, D.C.
Each year, on the eve the riders arrive in town, they hold a candle-light vigil to honor the lost, and remember the perils that Law Enforcement Officers face on a daily basis.
I hope to share some of my experiences when I return!
Team MPD, as part of Police Unity Tour Chapter II, are participating in the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial’s Police Unity Tour 2013. This Team, along with many others from around the Country, will ride their bicycles from Southern New Jersey (and other regional areas) all the way to our Nation’s Capital in a 3-day ride to raise funds and awareness of the dangers Law Enforcement professionals face every day. There will be memorial services throughout the week to honor all of the Officers who have lost their lives on the job in 2012.
Team MPD hosted a Zumbathon to help them raise funds for the NLEOM and to participate in this thrice-century ride.
A great time was had by all! If ever you need a boost of energy, find the nearest Zumba Instructor – they have it in SPADES!
